Heathrow Airport Transfer - LHR

Basic Information

Currently the third-busiest international airport on the planet in terms of passenger traffic, London Heathrow International Airport (LHR) is just 19 km / 12 miles west of central London, next to Hounslow, Longford and West Drayton. Heathrow Airport boasts two long runways, both of which measure more than 3,660 metres / 12,000 feet, along with a total of four terminals.

Built to handle around 45 million passengers a year, London Heathrow Airport has become over stretched and is almost bursting at the seams, currently serving some 70 million passengers. This equates to around 200,000 passengers every single day. However, a new fifth airport terminal is scheduled to open in early 2008 and with a capacity of a further 30 million annual passengers, this terminal will literally transform Heathrow overnight. The fifth terminal will operate independently and instantly become one of the biggest UK airports in its own right.

Nearby Airports

  • London Gatwick Airport - LGW is London's second busiest airport
  • London Stansted Airport - STN is London's third largest airport, handling mainly low cost carriers. No transatlantic flights currently operate from STN; American Airlines briefly offered a service from JFK which has been discontinued.
  • London Luton (LTN) - London's second low-cost airport, and the 5th busiest airport in the UK. Considerably further from the city than LHR.
  • London City Airport (LCY) - London's smallest airport, and also the closest airport to downtown and the financial district. LCY can only handle small aircraft, and currently flights only operate to destinations in Europe, though British Airways intends to begin an all business-class service to New York in 2009.
